The 1996 Summer Olympics—based in Atlanta, Georgia, United States—marked the first time that women would participate in the association football (soccer) tournament.[2][3] Group Stage matches were held in Miami, Orlando, Birmingham and Washington, D.C., while the semifinals and final were held at Sanford Stadium in Athens, Georgia, like the final of the men's tournament.
